The nuts
& bolts

Below is the workflow for Stacks which was designed and tested to allow up to 1 million people to play concurrently.

There are three core elements of our streaming solution to achieve this level of scale.
  • A Contest Stream: connected to node.js servers directing the current state of the contest. Any contest interactions were stored in Redis cluster that could be connected into backend game services, e.g Play Fab and/or reward services, like Giftbit
  • A Broadcast Stream: For hosted broadcasts we used horizontal scaling to serve viewers the main broadcast directly on their device. Wowza and Red5Pro edge servers distribute and load balanced broadcasts from the origin server.
  • A webRTC Stream: Selected participants would be invited to directly interact with the host, WebRTC network and video streaming diagnostics would be used to sort through selected participants with an audience handler guiding live participants through the broadcast process.

Resulting in the following Interactive Experience:
A random number generator will be used to funnel the potential participants from 1 Million+ to 2500 to 25 on the Digital platform - where the broadcast quality can be determined for the final “Broadcast 9”. When a participant gives a wrong answer they are dropped, then the RNG is used to fill in their spot with a player in the waiting queue who has answered correctly to that point.
